I’ve been in the business support industry for decades working with national organizations, accelerators and universities to design and deliver programing and mentor their entrepreneurs. I work mostly with women, often Indigenous and mostly around money.

As the owner of a bookkeeping business I got to work deeply with 100s of business owners and I got to see what worked and what didn’t.

I found that my most successful business owners ignored the conventional advice and my business owners who struggled the most were the ones trying to ‘get back to the basics’ of marketing, operations, finance and human resources.

My most successful business owners focused on people. Not as people-centred marketing, operations, finance and human resources, but they set up their whole business to focus on people.

I dug into my engineering and science background to pull it all apart and find out what they were doing and how to make it work for everyone.

The economy is changing and more people are starting businesses that never would have in the past. Whether it is because of downsizing, underemployment or just no jobs, your clients need help in making their businesses easier and more profitable.

The economy and business are changing.

Delivery channels, market share, marketing, transparency, competition, customer expectations, the economy, minimalism, the environment, the sharing economy, how we spend our time and what we want out of life are all in flux. Stage 1 Owner’s Journey

Your business owners must have clarity around why they have chosen to do this. They will be faced with challenges and the clearer they are on their vision they more easily they will weather those challenges.

The entrepreneurial journey is one of self discovery and growth. This stage begins that journey and sets them up with resilience, an open mind, optimism and sense of belonging to a large group of many others on the same path.

Stage 2 Discovery Dance

Getting the first customers is the biggest challenge in starting a business. Which means it often gets pushed back until everything else is done.  Most people are told to plan their business and marketing, then build it out before getting customers. Most people are happy to do that.

Doing the Discovery Dance early gets your small business owners talking to customers to learn who they are, what they want, how they talk about their problem/solution and what is important to them. This can only come from talking to customers.

The legal, administrative and financial pieces of setting up a business. Name, url, registration and marketing materials. Financing if required.

Stage 4 Customer’s Journey

The first customers will come through personal selling within the owner’s network. At first serving and delighting customers takes more work. do what’s unsustainable at first. Now is the time to put marketing in place and efficiencies in operations to deliver predictable delight every time.

Stage 5 Team’s Journey

With a reliable source of customers and predictable methods in place for delighting them, it’s time to build out the team. Your business owners will learn how to attract, engage and delight their team.

Stage 6 Making it Effortless with the Essential 11 Algorithms

An algorithm is a set of instructions that produces a predictable outcome. Every action in business can be slotted into 1 of 11 algorithms.
